Barclays strategists are advising investors to reduce risk exposure ahead of September, citing seasonal patterns, softer U.S. activity, and renewed pressure from rates and energy markets. Despite this shorter-term caution, the bank keeps a constructive medium-term stance on equities, pointing to resilient growth, an earnings upcycle and valuations that favor stocks over bonds.

Key Points

  • Barclays recommends reducing beta exposure and employing tactical hedges ahead of September due to seasonal and macro risks - impacts: broad equity markets, especially cyclical sectors.
  • The bank highlights rate pressure from an ongoing global tightening cycle, with economists forecasting two additional Fed hikes in 2026 - impacts: fixed income and interest-rate sensitive sectors.
  • Energy remains an unpredictable factor because of an unresolved U.S.-Iran standoff, and the AI trade is showing greater dispersion between winners and losers - impacts: energy, technology and capex-related sectors such as industrials and mining.

Barclays strategists are urging investors to pare back risk as markets head toward September, saying a mix of seasonality, cooling economic momentum and renewed pressures from interest rates and energy warrant a more defensive posture for the near term. The bank, however, retains a broadly positive view on equities over the medium term.

In a research note, Emmanuel Cau said the relative calm of the summer has given way to heightened volatility. He advised that "Less beta and more tactical hedges seem wise, but a lot of hawkishness is priced in now, while resilient growth & earnings remain a key anchor to the bull market."

Barclays pointed to several concrete reasons for adjusting positioning. The bank flagged September's historically weak seasonality - a period that is often challenging for markets - and highlighted its proximity to U.S. midterm elections as a factor that can add volatility. The note also referenced softer U.S. activity readings and the waning boost from second-quarter earnings as additional reasons for caution.

Monetary policy dynamics are another driver of the bank's more defensive near-term stance. Barclays' economists anticipate a further tightening cycle, expecting two additional Federal Reserve rate hikes in 2026 and noting that the European Central Bank and Bank of Japan are also participating in the global tightening dynamic. That backdrop contributes to renewed rate pressure in markets and supports the call for reduced beta exposure.

Energy markets, Barclays added, remain a key source of uncertainty. The research team described oil as a wildcard amid an unresolved U.S.-Iran standoff, a situation Cau characterized as placing prices in "the danger zone."

The bank also warned that the artificial intelligence theme is evolving, with growing dispersion between winners and losers as the trade matures. That dispersion implies investors may need to be more selective within technology and related exposure.

Despite these short-term concerns, Barclays judged the risks to be manageable. "Big picture, however, we see these hiccups as manageable, as the key pillars supporting equities stay firmly in place," the note said, citing resilient global activity, an earnings upcycle with earnings-per-share growth near 20%, and valuations that it views as supportive of equities versus bonds.

Reflecting this balance between caution and selective opportunity, the bank lowered overall beta in its sector positioning. It trimmed exposure to construction materials to marketweight and raised insurance to marketweight. At the same time, Barclays remains constructive on capital expenditure-related segments, maintaining positive stances on parts of industrials, technology and mining that stand to benefit from capex cycles.

Bottom line: Barclays recommends dialing down benchmark sensitivity and introducing tactical hedges into September to navigate seasonal and macro risks, while continuing to favor parts of the market geared to resilient growth and capex-driven earnings.

Risks

  • Seasonal weakness in September and proximity to U.S. midterm elections could increase volatility - sectors impacted: broad equities and cyclicals.
  • Renewed rate pressures from an expected global tightening cycle may weigh on rates-sensitive assets and market liquidity - sectors impacted: bonds, financials and rate-sensitive industries.
  • Elevated energy price risk due to geopolitical tensions (U.S.-Iran standoff) leaves oil markets in a 'danger zone' - sector impacted: energy and energy-linked equities.
