Overview
BofA Securities upgraded precision-engineering group Renishaw to "buy" from "underperform" and increased its price objective to 5,400p from 2,779p, citing an upcycle that the broker now considers stronger than its prior view. The firm raised its fiscal 2027 EBIT estimate by 22% to 181 million, which the broker says is 11% above consensus.
Why BofA shifted its view
BofA says its conviction has increased because leading indicators across Renishaw's served markets point to above-cycle growth, rather than the high single-digit through-cycle pace applied by consensus. The broker highlighted three industry data points that underpin its more optimistic outlook:
- Its U.S. semiconductor team projects wafer fabrication equipment growth above 30% in calendar 2027. BofA connects that to a 20% growth forecast for Renishaw's Position Measurement division, which contributes 30% of group revenue.
- Orders reported by the Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association rose 36% in the first half of calendar 2026. BofA sees that supporting 17% growth in Industrial Metrology, the group's largest division at 58% of revenue.
- Adoption of additive manufacturing is broadening, especially within aerospace and defense, which BofA believes will underpin 22% growth in Specialised Technology, a division representing 12% of revenue.
From these indicators, BofA concludes that "every leading indicator it tracks" points to Renishaw growing faster than the consensus assumption of 9%.
Operational leverage and capital return
A recent site visit to Renishaw's Miskin facility reinforced the broker's view that the company can expand output without substantial new capital expenditure. BofA says existing capacity should provide operating leverage that can improve return on invested capital from 10% in the first half of fiscal 2026 to 14% in fiscal 2028.
The analysts also note an expected excess cash balance of 210 million by fiscal 2027, which they say is equivalent to roughly 6% of the company's market capitalisation and could be available for distribution.
Forecasts, valuation and stock movement
BofA lifted its three-year earnings-per-share compound annual growth rate estimate to 21% from 10%, before an expected normalisation in fiscal 2029. The broker's revised discounted cash flow based valuation of 5,400p implies about 10% upside from current share levels, according to its calculations.
Breaking down the lift in the price target, BofA attributes 56% of the increase to higher explicit forecasts, 21% to improved medium-term assumptions, 14% to a higher terminal growth rate, and the remainder to roll-forward adjustments.
The research note also referenced a recent market snapshot for the Renishaw ticker, RSW, which showed a quoted level of 5,165.00, an increase of 271.0 points or 5.54% in real-time data presented alongside the analysis.
Concluding assessment
BofA's upgrade and material upward revisions to earnings and valuation rest on the broker's interpretation of leading data across wafer fab equipment demand, machine tool orders and additive manufacturing adoption. The firm highlights potential operating leverage at existing facilities and a meaningful excess cash position as additional supports for returns and distributions.
