When Sandra Martinez was unable to make the trip to BTS’s concert in Goyang, South Korea, she and several friends opted for a different way to be part of the action. On Saturday night they gathered at an AMC theater in Los Angeles to watch the K-pop supergroup’s ARIRANG tour projected on the cinema’s large screen.
“We couldn’t go to the concert, so it’s fun to gather with friends and fellow BTS ARMY,” Martinez, who is self-employed, said at the AMC theater located at The Grove outdoor mall. ARMY is the name used by the fans of BTS.
BTS is composed of seven members - RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook - and are managed under Big Hit Music, an independent label that operates within Hybe Corporation. The global theatrical presentation consists of two full-length concerts from the band’s world tour: one filmed live in Goyang on Saturday and another set to be shown from Tokyo on April 18. The double-screening format is intended to allow fans around the world to share in the concert experience even if they cannot attend a live date.
Martinez said the group’s reach sets it apart from other acts in the K-pop genre. “It’s not just for younger people. It’s for any age, without limits on race or gender,” she said. “Music comes from the heart.”
At the theater she met Millie B, whom Martinez had connected with on Instagram. Millie B, a pharmacy technician who also creates BTS-related content online, was holding a BTS glow stick during the screening. She said the band’s return after a multi-year hiatus has energized the fan community.
“They went to the military and now they’re finally back with a big tour,” Millie B said. “It’s a big deal.”
BTS paused activities in 2022 so members could complete South Korea’s mandatory military service. According to the information provided, all seven members had finished their service by mid-2025, after which they reunited to record their fifth studio album, titled ARIRANG. The world tour for the album launched on Thursday in Goyang.
The album, released in March, achieved notable chart success. It topped the Billboard 200 for two weeks, an accomplishment described as a first for a K-pop act, and its lead single, “Swim,” debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100.
Organizers expect the tour to produce substantial revenues. The itinerary includes 34 stops across the globe - a run that includes a Los Angeles date in September - which the promotional material characterizes as a new record for the most dates by a K-pop artist.
Nicole Lee, a fan who already holds tickets to the Los Angeles concert, said she attended the AMC screening to preview the performance. “I wanted to see their performance a little bit early,” she said. “I’m just happy that they’re finally back together again.”
For Lee, the group’s broad international connection stems from how members communicate with and show care for their audience. “I think people really resonate with that,” she said.
