HOUSTON, June 14 - A sudden morning storm drenched supporters of Germany and Curaçao as they arrived early for their teams' World Cup opener on Sunday, sending many on an impromptu search for umbrellas, rain protection and, in some cases, beer.
The fast-moving weather caught a number of fans off guard and sent them into a store across from the stadium, where staff reported brisk sales of umbrellas and raincoats that were running low.
"We are here getting a raincoat and an umbrella for the rain," said Caroline Sluys, who traveled with her son from Curaçao to Houston for the game. "It is not going to dampen our spirits. We are going to be yelling and screaming because it’s the first time Curacao has made it to the World Cup." Her comments reflected a determination among some visitors to remain enthusiastic despite the conditions.
While many local attendees arrived equipped for the variable weather, the downpour nevertheless surprised several early arrivals heading to the stadium. Covered seating inside the venue provided relief for those who made it in.
Not all fans prioritized rain gear. Several shrugged off the showers and instead focused on locating beer, after discovering that stadium beer sales had not yet started.
"We don’t have any rain gear. We are looking for beer," said Leon Baucke, a Munich resident who traveled to the match with friends. "We are used to it because the weather isn’t great in Germany." His remark underscored that some supporters treated the rain as an expected inconvenience rather than a deterrent to enjoying the match atmosphere.
The scene highlighted two immediate responses to the unexpected weather: a rapid consumer purchase of rain-related items at nearby retailers and a search for refreshments outside the stadium while internal concessions were not yet operating.
