’One Battle After Another’ Tops BAFTA Nominations as ’Sinners’ and ’Hamnet’ Receive Strong Recognition

At Britain’s premier film awards, the action-tinged dark comedy One Battle After Another led the field with 14 BAFTA nominations. Vampire thriller Sinners and literary adaptation Hamnet also earned significant recognition, with high-profile acting and directing nods spread across a diverse slate of films.

Key Points

  • One Battle After Another led BAFTA Film Award nominations with 14 nods, including five acting nominations and a best director nod for Paul Thomas Anderson - sectors impacted include film production and box office revenue.
  • Sinners earned 13 nominations, recognising Michael B. Jordan, director Ryan Coogler and Wunmi Mosaku, signalling strong awards-season attention for films celebrating music and cultural stories - this affects studios, distributors and talent branding.
  • Hamnet received 11 nominations, with Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal recognised for their roles; Chloe Zhao is the only woman nominated for best director, reflecting director-level competition among prominent filmmakers.

The BAFTA Film Awards nominations were announced in London, with the action-tinged dark comedy One Battle After Another emerging as the most nominated film. The picture, which features Leonardo DiCaprio as a washed-up revolutionary whose daughter is kidnapped, collected 14 nominations overall.

Among One Battle After Another's nominations, five were for acting, including leading acting category nods for Leonardo DiCaprio and Chase Infiniti, who portrays his daughter. Supporting acting nominations from the same film include Teyana Taylor, Sean Penn and Benicio del Toro. The film also secured a best director nomination for Paul Thomas Anderson and is a contender for the awards’ top honour, best film.

Close behind, the vampire thriller and box office hit Sinners received 13 nominations. The film, which celebrates blues music and Black culture in the Segregation-era U.S. South, features Michael B. Jordan in a dual role as twins who return to their hometown to open a juke joint. Director Ryan Coogler was recognised with nominations in both the directing and original screenplay categories, and cast member Wunmi Mosaku picked up a supporting actress nod.

Hamnet, the cinematic adaptation of Maggie O'Farrell's 2020 novel, received 11 nominations. The film, which fictionalises the relationship between William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes and examines the grief following the death of their son Hamnet, earned a leading actress nomination for Jessie Buckley for her portrayal of Agnes Hathaway. Paul Mescal received a supporting actor nomination for his portrayal of the bard. Chloe Zhao is the sole woman included among the best director nominees.

The best film category includes One Battle After Another, Sinners, Hamnet, Marty Supreme and Sentimental Value. The competition for best director spans a slate of filmmakers: Paul Thomas Anderson, Ryan Coogler and Chloe Zhao are joined by Josh Safdie for Marty Supreme, Yorgos Lanthimos for Bugonia and Joachim Trier for Norwegian family drama Sentimental Value.

Marty Supreme itself secured 11 nominations in total, and the film's title role earned expected recognition for Timothée Chalamet.

The leading actor field is competitive, with nominations for Robert Aramayo for his portrayal of a Tourette syndrome campaigner in I Swear; Ethan Hawke for playing lyricist Lorenz Hart in Blue Moon; Jesse Plemons for Bugonia, in which his character kidnaps a female pharmaceuticals boss played by Emma Stone under the belief she is an alien; and Timothée Chalamet for Marty Supreme.

On the leading actress side, Emma Stone was recognised for her role in Bugonia. She joins Rose Byrne, nominated for her portrayal of a mother unraveling in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You; Kate Hudson for Song Sung Blue, the story of a Neil Diamond tribute band; and Renate Reinsve for Sentimental Value.

The nominations list also included several notable omissions. Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande were not nominated in the acting categories for their performances in Wicked: For Good. The musical sequel received nominations only in costume design and makeup & hair categories. The article notes that while Wicked: For Good's BAFTA recognition was limited, it nevertheless performed better at BAFTA than at the Academy Awards, where it received no nominations. The predecessor film in the franchise had previously received seven BAFTA nominations.

The announced nominees span a variety of genres and storytelling approaches, from high-concept thrillers and music-driven narratives to adaptations of literary works and intimate family dramas. The spread of nominations highlights both established filmmakers and performers and projects that have achieved box office traction as well as critical attention.

Details on winners and the awards ceremony schedule were not included in the nominations announcement.

Risks

  • Notable snubs in acting categories for Wicked: For Good - the musical sequel was nominated only for costume design and makeup & hair, which may limit its awards-season momentum and associated promotional opportunities for the studio and associated partners.
  • Tight competition across multiple films for top directing and acting categories - uncertainty over eventual winners may affect marketing and distribution strategies for nominated films and talent.
  • Concentration of nominations among a handful of films could concentrate media and commercial attention, potentially reducing visibility for other nominated projects and their commercial prospects.
