Child Killed, Several Injured After Drone Strike in Yaroslavl Region, Officials Say

Russian authorities say a Ukrainian drone strike in the Yaroslavl region northeast of Moscow resulted in the death of a child, injuries to three people, and damage to multiple residential buildings and a retail facility. Local and national officials reported differing totals for the number of drones intercepted during the overnight operation.

Key Points

  • Civilian impact - A child was killed and three people were injured; the injured are receiving medical care.
  • Property damage - Several residential buildings and a retail object sustained damage in the suburban district.
  • Defence response - Local officials said more than 30 drones were repelled in Yaroslavl, while the Defence Ministry reported 155 drones intercepted overnight across multiple regions including the Moscow region.

MOSCOW, March 28 - A drone attack in Russia's Yaroslavl region, located to the north-east of Moscow, resulted in civilian casualties and structural damage, regional authorities said on Saturday.

Mikhail Evraev, the governor of Yaroslavl region, wrote on his Telegram channel that a child who was inside a private home in a suburban district at the time of the attack died. The governor said the child's parents were hospitalized in a serious condition. He added that a woman living in a neighbouring house also sustained injuries and that all the injured were receiving necessary medical care.

Governor Evraev reported damage to several residential buildings and to what he described as "a retail object" in the affected area. He said local air defence units repelled more than 30 Ukrainian drones during the incident.

At the national level, the Russian Defence Ministry issued a statement on Saturday saying that a total of 155 Ukrainian drones had been repelled and destroyed overnight across a number of Russian regions, including the Moscow region. The ministry's figure covered a broader geographic area than the local count cited by the Yaroslavl governor.

Officials did not provide further operational details in their public statements regarding the sequence of events, the precise locations of all interceptions, or the identities of the injured beyond their reported medical condition. The governor's account emphasized the human toll in the suburb where the fatality occurred and noted the emergency response to those hurt and to damaged civilian structures.

Situation snapshot

  • One child killed in a private home in a suburban district of Yaroslavl region.
  • Three people reported injured, including the deceased child's parents who are hospitalized in serious condition, and a neighbouring resident.
  • Damage reported to multiple residential buildings and to a retail object in the area.
  • Local authorities reported repelling more than 30 drones; the Defence Ministry reported 155 drones repelled overnight across several regions including Moscow.

  • Uncertainty over the scale and scope of the drone campaign, reflected in differing drone-interception figures from local and national officials - this affects defence and security assessments.
  • Ongoing risk to civilians and residential infrastructure from airborne attacks, with direct implications for housing and local retail sectors in affected regions.
  • Pressure on emergency medical and local response services to treat multiple injured civilians and manage damage to populated districts.
