On the downside, Antofagasta PLC (LON:ANTO) led decliners after dropping 4.55% or 171.00 points to trade at 3,585.00 at the close. Glencore PLC (LON:GLEN) slipped 2.14% or 12.00 points to finish at 548.90 and GSK plc (LON:GSK) fell 2.10% or 39.00 points to 1,817.50.

Market breadth and activity

Rising issues outnumbered losers on the London Stock Exchange by 906 to 790, while 560 stocks finished unchanged.

Commodities and energy

Gold Futures for December delivery gained 0.63% or 27.82 to $4,448.22 a troy ounce. In the oil complex, crude for September delivery rose 0.43% or 0.35 to $81.60 a barrel, and the October Brent contract increased 0.78% or 0.68 to trade at $87.75 a barrel.

Foreign exchange and dollar index

The British pound strengthened versus the U.S. dollar, with GBP/USD up 0.50% to 1.36. EUR/GBP was effectively unchanged, moving 0.06% to 0.85. The US Dollar Index Futures declined 0.40% to 99.45.

This session reflected a mix of sector-level strength in select software and property-related names alongside pressures in mining and large-cap pharmaceuticals. Market breadth was mixed and commodities and FX registered modest gains by the close.
