On the downside, Vistry Group PLC (LON:VTYV) recorded the largest drop among major movers, falling 9.84% - a decline of 31.00 points - to close at 284.00. Smith & Nephew PLC (LON:SN) fell 6.27%, a 75.00 point loss, to finish at 1,122.00. BP PLC (LON:BP) declined 4.91%, shedding 27.10 points to close at 525.00.

Market breadth on the London Stock Exchange favored advancing issues, with 1,056 stocks rising versus 647 that fell. A further 553 issues finished unchanged.

Commodities showed divergent moves during the session. Gold Futures for December delivery were higher, up 1.29% or 52.82, to trade at $4,143.32 a troy ounce. By contrast, crude oil posted sizeable declines: the September crude contract fell 5.39% or $4.33 to $76.01 a barrel, while the October Brent contract slipped 5.20% or $4.36 to $79.41 a barrel.

In currency trading, GBP/USD was unchanged 0.13% at 1.34, and EUR/GBP was unchanged 0.07% at 0.86. The US Dollar Index Futures held steady, unchanged 0.00% at 99.78.

Overall, the session was characterized by notable strength among mining and related industrials, balanced against weakness in some large-cap health and energy names and a sharp pullback in oil prices.
