Tokyo's Nikkei 225 ended the session up 0.21% as advances in the Real Estate, Banking and Textile sectors pushed the index higher. While several large-cap names posted solid gains, a number of firms saw steep declines. Option-implied volatility spiked, and crude oil, Brent and gold prices moved on the commodities board. Currency pairs were little changed, with the dollar marginally stronger versus the yen.

Tokyo equities closed higher on Tuesday, with the Nikkei 225 finishing the session up 0.21% as gains in Real Estate, Banking and Textile stocks provided upward momentum.

At the close in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 registered a 0.21% advance.

Among individual names, the top performers included Shift Inc (TYO:3697), which rose 4.28% - a gain of 28.50 points - to finish at 695.10. TDK Corp (TYO:6762) added 2.77%, up 56.00 points to 2,076.50, while Fujitsu Ltd. (TYO:6702) increased 2.76%, or 90.00 points, closing at 3,345.00.

On the downside, Archion Corp (TYO:543A) led decliners, slipping 7.16% - a drop of 34.00 points - to 441.00 at the close. Disco Corp (TYO:6146) fell 6.15%, down 4,120.00 points to end at 62,860.00, and Fujikura Ltd. (TYO:5803) declined 5.00%, a loss of 230.00 points, to close at 4,370.00.

Market breadth on the Tokyo Stock Exchange favored advancers, with 2,248 stocks rising against 1,299 that fell, and 239 issues ending unchanged.

Measures of expected market turbulence rose sharply. The Nikkei Volatility index, which tracks the implied volatility of Nikkei 225 options, was up 42.07% to 38.60.

Commodities showed notable moves: crude oil for May delivery climbed 2.12% - up $2.38 - to $114.79 a barrel. Brent oil for June delivery rose 1.35% - up $1.48 - to $111.25 a barrel. Meanwhile, the June Gold Futures contract edged lower by 0.12%, or $5.65, to trade at $4,679.05 a troy ounce.

In currency trading, USD/JPY was up 0.06% at 159.79, while EUR/JPY rose 0.07% to 184.47. The US Dollar Index Futures was trading slightly firmer, up 0.02% at 99.82.
