Glass, Plastic and Oil, Gas & Electricity sectors lift index despite mixed individual stock moves

Taiwan market edges up as Taiwan Weighted closes at new record

Taiwan stocks closed modestly higher on Wednesday, with the Taiwan Weighted gaining 0.11% to finish at a fresh all-time high. Broad sector strength was driven by gains in Glass, Plastic and Oil, Gas & Electricity names, while individual large movers included several stocks with double-digit percentage swings in both directions. Commodities and currency moves were mixed.

Taiwan's equity market finished higher on Wednesday, with the benchmark Taiwan Weighted rising 0.11% to record a new all-time closing high.

Sector performance was led by gains in the Glass, Plastic and Oil, Gas & Electricity groups, which supported the modest advance in the overall index.

The session's top performers on the Taiwan Weighted included Hung Ching Development & Construction Co Ltd (TW:2527), which climbed 10.00% or 3.30 points to close at 36.30. Ennostar Inc (TW:3714) also posted a 10.00% gain, adding 5.20 points to finish at 57.20, while FarGlory Hotel Co Ltd (TW:2712) jumped 10.00% or 1.50 points to end the day at 16.50.

On the downside, United Renewable Energy Co Ltd (TW:3576) fell 10.00% or 1.90 points to close at 17.10. Yeong Guan Energy Technology Group Co Ltd (TW:1589) declined 9.92% or 0.61 points to finish at 5.54, and Chung Fu Tex-International Corp (TW:1435) slipped 7.46% or 1.10 points to 13.65 in late trade.

Notable market breadth figures recorded that session included: "Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Taiwan Stock Exchange by 0 to 0."

Several individual stock milestones were recorded during the session. Shares of Hung Ching Development & Construction Co Ltd (TW:2527) rose to 52-week highs after the 10.00% gain that brought the closing price to 36.30. Yeong Guan Energy Technology Group Co Ltd (TW:1589) fell to an all-time low, losing 9.92% to end at 5.54. Chung Fu Tex-International Corp (TW:1435) dropped to a five-year low, down 7.46% to 13.65.


Commodities showed mixed moves. Crude oil for May delivery edged down 0.09% or 0.08 to $91.20 a barrel. Brent oil for June delivery rose 0.60% or 0.57, settling at $95.36 a barrel. The June Gold Futures contract slipped 0.09% or 4.35 to trade at $4,845.75 a troy ounce.

Foreign exchange rates were also active. USD/TWD was up 0.29% at 31.63, while TWD/CNY moved 0.19% to 0.22. The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.01% at 97.92.
