Electronics, glass and paper & pulp lead advance; mixed individual stock moves amid broader commodity and FX shifts

Taiwan market closes at record high as key sectors drive gains

Taiwan's benchmark rallied on Thursday, with the Taiwan Weighted index finishing 1.75% higher and reaching a fresh all-time high. Strength in the Glass, Electronic Parts/Components and Paper & Pulp sectors supported the advance, while a handful of individual names posted steep declines. Commodity and currency movements were mixed, with crude and Brent oil up, gold lower, and modest FX shifts in USD/TWD and TWD/CNY.

Taiwan equities closed higher on Thursday, led by gains in the Glass, Electronic Parts/Components and Paper & Pulp sectors, pushing the market to a new record.

The Taiwan Weighted rose 1.75% at the close to reach an all-time high.

Top performers

  • Action Electronics Co Ltd (TW:3024) advanced 10.00%, gaining 1.20 points to finish at 13.20.
  • Taiwan Asia Semiconductor Corp (TW:2340) increased 10.00%, up 3.55 points to 39.05.
  • MediaTek Inc (TW:2454) climbed 10.00%, adding 190.00 points to end the session at 2,090.00.

Lagging names

  • Yeong Guan Energy Technology Group Co Ltd (TW:1589) fell 9.92%, down 0.61 points to close at 5.54.
  • Para Light Electronics Co Ltd (TW:6226) dropped 8.75%, losing 1.40 points to finish at 14.60.
  • Advanced Optoelectronic Technology Inc (TW:3437) declined 7.53%, slipping 2.25 points to 27.65.

Market breadth as reported showed "Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Taiwan Stock Exchange by 0 to 0."

Among notable price milestones, shares of Yeong Guan Energy Technology Group Co Ltd (TW:1589) reached an all-time low after the 9.92% decline to 5.54. Taiwan Asia Semiconductor Corp (TW:2340) moved to a 52-week high on its 10.00% gain to 39.05. MediaTek Inc (TW:2454) set an all-time high, rising 10.00% to reach 2,090.00.


Commodities and currencies

Crude oil for June delivery traded higher by 0.90%, or $0.84, at $93.80 a barrel. Brent crude for June delivery rose 0.80%, or $0.82, to $102.73 a barrel. The June Gold Futures contract declined 0.48%, or $22.84, to $4,730.16 a troy ounce.

On the currency front, USD/TWD was up 0.14% at 31.52, while TWD/CNY was unchanged at 0.05% to 0.22. The US Dollar Index Futures moved 0.06% higher to 98.47.

The trading session combined a broad market advance with concentrated moves in individual names and cross-market price action in commodities and FX.
