Taiwan's benchmark index closed higher on Friday, rising 4.10% as advances in the Glass, Electronic Parts/Components and Optoelectronic sectors pushed the market upward. Several individual stocks recorded double-digit percentage moves on both the upside and downside. Key commodity and currency benchmarks showed modest moves during the session.

Leadtek Research Inc (TW:2465) completed the set of session leaders, up 10.00% or 5.00 points to 55.00 at the close.

Lagging names

On the downside, Shan-Loong Transportation Co Ltd (TW:2616) was the weakest, falling 9.98% or 2.15 points to end at 19.40. Shin Shin Natural Gas Co Ltd (TW:9918) retreated 9.96%, losing 5.50 points to close at 49.70. Hsin Kao Gas Co Ltd (TW:9931) slipped 9.96%, down 4.60 points to 41.60.

Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Taiwan Stock Exchange by 0 to 0.

Commodities and currencies

In commodities, crude oil for April delivery traded lower, down 0.65% or 0.62 to $95.11 a barrel. Brent oil for May delivery was down 0.26% or 0.26, at $100.20 a barrel. The April Gold Futures contract decreased 0.38% or 19.26 to trade at $5,106.54 a troy ounce.

On foreign exchange markets, USD/TWD rose 0.22% to 31.95, while TWD/CNY moved 0.05% to 0.22. The US Dollar Index Futures recorded a small gain, up 0.09% at 99.84.

The session featured sharp individual stock moves in both directions within a market that closed well into positive territory, while select commodities and currency pairs showed modest fluctuations.
