Taiwan shares closed lower on Monday, with the Taiwan Weighted index falling 1.45% as losses in the Glass and Plastic sectors pushed the market down. A small group of stocks posted double-digit percentage gains while several notable names ended with steep declines. Commodities and currency moves accompanied the selling.

Taiwan equities ended Monday's trading session lower, with the benchmark Taiwan Weighted finishing down 1.45% at the close. Market weakness was driven in part by declines in the Glass and Plastic sectors, which weighed on the broader index.

On the Taiwan Weighted, the session's strongest performers included HannsTouch Solution Inc (TW:3049), which climbed 9.95% or 0.84 points to settle at 9.28. Nanya Technology Corp (TW:2408) rose 9.93% or 29.50 points to close at 326.50, and Zenitron Corp (TW:3028) advanced 9.92% or 4.15 points to finish at 46.00.

At the other end of the board, Ability Enterprise Co Ltd (TW:2374) led declines, dropping 9.94% or 9.40 points to end at 85.20. Loop Telecommunication International Inc (TW:3025) fell 9.91% or 7.60 points to close at 69.10, and United Microelectronics Corporation (TW:2303) slipped 8.77% or 6.00 points to finish at 62.40.

The exchange reported an unusual breadth reading, noting that falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the Taiwan Stock Exchange by 0 to 0.

Within the session's notable moves, shares of Nanya Technology Corp (TW:2408) rose to five-year highs, ending the day up 9.93% or 29.50 points at 326.50. Zenitron Corp (TW:3028) also marked a milestone, with its shares rising to all-time highs after gaining 9.92% or 4.15 points to 46.00.


Commodity markets registered pronounced declines alongside the Taiwan equity sell-off. Crude oil for March delivery fell 5.37% or 3.50 to trade at $61.71 a barrel. Brent oil for April delivery declined 5.19% or 3.60 to $65.72 a barrel. April Gold Futures dropped 3.53% or 167.41 to trade at $4,577.69 a troy ounce.

On the currency front, USD/TWD was up 0.17% to 31.68, while TWD/CNY was unchanged 0.09% to 0.22. The US Dollar Index Futures rose 0.25% to 97.11.

Overall, the session combined sector-led weakness with select outsized individual stock moves and notable commodity price declines. Market participants registered both multi-year highs for select technology names and large percentage losses for several other issues during the same trading day.
