Portugal's stock market closed lower on Friday as the PSI finished the session down 0.14%. Broad weakness in the Consumer Goods, Telecoms and Financials sectors contributed to the decline at the close in Lisbon.

Among individual names, Jeronimo Martins SGPS SA was the day's strongest performer on the PSI, rising 1.22% - an increase of 0.22 points - to finish at 18.23. Sonae SGPS SA added 0.50%, or 0.01 points, closing at 2.03, while Semapa advanced 0.48% - a 0.10 point gain - to trade at 20.85 by the end of the session.

On the downside, Galp Energia Nom was the weakest stock on the index, slipping 2.29% or 0.48 points to close at 20.52. CTT Correios de Portugal SA declined 1.37%, a fall of 0.09 points, to end at 6.49. EDP Renovaveis was down 0.45% or 0.06 points, finishing the day at 13.14.

Market breadth on the Lisbon exchange tilted to the upside in terms of counts: 17 stocks closed higher, eight fell and eight were unchanged.

Commodities showed mixed movement during the session. Brent oil for November delivery ticked up 0.05% - an increase of $0.05 - to settle at $95.57 a barrel. In contrast, U.S. crude for October delivery moved lower by 0.43% or $0.39, ending at $90.91 a barrel. The December Gold Futures contract retreated 1.25%, a drop of $56.65, to trade at $4,483.25 a troy ounce.

Currency and dollar benchmarks were also in focus. EUR/USD was effectively unchanged, quoted at 1.16 with a 0.06% notation, while EUR/GBP registered a 0.02% move to 0.86. The U.S. Dollar Index Futures strengthened 0.20% to 99.08.

These closing levels reflect the day's trading where select consumer and industrial names outperformed even as energy and postal services lagged. The session's commodity and currency readings provide context for cross-market influences that accompanied the PSI's modest decline.

Risks

  • Volatility in energy prices - Brent and U.S. crude showed divergent moves, creating uncertainty for energy-sector equities such as Galp (impacting the energy sector).
  • Precious metals weakness - the decline in December Gold Futures could affect investor sentiment and related sectors (impacting materials and holdings exposed to gold).
  • Currency fluctuations - shifts in EUR/USD, EUR/GBP and the strengthening U.S. Dollar Index may influence exporters and importers as well as multinational corporate earnings (impacting trade-exposed and financial sectors).
