Commodities and currency moves

Commodity markets were weaker during the trading day. US crude oil for September delivery dropped 5.86%, a fall of 4.96, to trade at $79.71 per barrel. Brent futures for October delivery declined 4.53%, or 3.98, to $83.95 a barrel. December Gold Futures eased 0.45%, slipping 18.65 to trade at $4,088.35 per troy ounce.

Where things stand

The WIG30 closed at a record level, propelled by gains in several large-cap names across energy, technology and materials. While a number of top-weighted stocks pushed the index higher, several consumer-facing and services companies ended the session in negative territory. Simultaneous declines in crude and Brent oil were notable developments during the session and were recorded alongside the market moves.

Risks

  • Sharp declines in crude and Brent oil prices could create uncertainty for energy-related companies and sector valuations.
  • Notable individual stock weakness in consumer and services names such as Allegro, Zabka and Benefit Systems may signal selective pressure within domestic consumer sectors.
  • Currency fluctuations, with both EUR/PLN and USD/PLN moving higher, could affect exporters and companies with foreign-currency exposure.
