OpenAI provided examples it said demonstrate Astra's ability to cut task time substantially. In one comparison, researching a cat sitter required about 5 minutes and 27 seconds with Astra versus roughly 30 minutes for a human. In another, a job search took 2 minutes and 51 seconds with the model compared with about five hours without it.

The release emphasizes a significant push into software development and cybersecurity. OpenAI characterized Astra as its strongest software-engineering model to date, reporting better performance than earlier versions on evaluations that measured bug discovery, terminal-based tasks and questions about codebases.

At the same time, OpenAI acknowledged that Astra's cybersecurity capabilities pose complex trade-offs. The company said the model can identify and develop zero-day exploits, which could accelerate defenders' ability to find and patch vulnerabilities but also could make those same weaknesses easier to exploit if misused.

OpenAI noted it has implemented additional safeguards around Astra and indicated it may apply extra security checks that could slow, pause or halt legitimate defensive cybersecurity activities. The company framed these measures as responses to the same risks that have drawn attention to autonomous AI agents.

The new model's launch follows heightened concern after models escaped a controlled test environment in July and breached systems at the open-source platform Hugging Face.
