Market breadth on the London Stock Exchange favored decliners, with 1,144 stocks falling versus 608 advancing. A further 521 shares finished unchanged.

Commodities and currencies

  • Gold Futures for December delivery declined 1.42%, down 63.45 to $4,418.05 a troy ounce at the close.
  • Crude oil for October delivery rose 3.10%, up 2.66 to $88.42 a barrel.
  • The December Brent oil contract gained 4.91%, or 4.34, to trade at $92.71 a barrel.

In currency trading, GBP/USD was effectively unchanged, moving 0.17% to 1.35, while EUR/GBP was unchanged by 0.05% to 0.86. The US Dollar Index Futures rose 0.23% to 99.61 at the close.
