Lisbon market edges up as financial and consumer names lead gains

PSI closes up 0.08% amid mixed sector moves and modest commodity and FX fluctuations

Portugal's main index finished modestly higher on Wednesday, with Financials, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services providing upward momentum. The PSI rose 0.08% at the close as a small group of stocks posted gains while a slightly larger number finished lower. Commodity and currency markets showed mixed moves alongside the equity session.

Portugal's stock market closed with a slight gain on Wednesday, driven by advances in the Financials, Consumer Goods and Consumer Services sectors.

Among individual names, Sonae SGPS SA (ELI:YSO) was one of the top performers, finishing the session higher by 1.46% - a rise of 0.03 points to close at 2.09. CTT Correios de Portugal SA (ELI:CTT) also recorded a 1.46% increase, adding 0.09 points to end at 6.27. Ren Redes Energeticas Nacionais SGPS SA (ELI:RENE) climbed 1.01%, or 0.04 points, to 3.49 in late trading.

On the downside, EDP Renovaveis (ELI:EDPR) led the decliners, slipping 1.78% - down 0.24 points to finish at 13.22. Mota Engil SGPS SA (ELI:MOTA) fell 1.08%, a decrease of 0.05 points to 4.56, while Altri SGPS SA (ELI:ALSS) lost 1.04%, or 0.05 points, to close at 4.74.

Market breadth in Lisbon showed more falling names than advancing ones: 14 stocks declined versus 11 advancers, while 6 shares ended the session unchanged.


Commodities and currencies moved in mixed fashion during the session. Brent crude for October delivery rose 0.32%, gaining 0.25 to trade at $79.61 a barrel. By contrast, crude oil for September delivery slipped 0.21%, or 0.16, to $75.61 a barrel. Precious metals posted a notable move as the December Gold Futures contract increased 3.41%, a jump of 141.74, to trade at $4,294.34 a troy ounce.

In foreign exchange markets, EUR/USD was effectively unchanged, moving 0.10% to 1.15, and EUR/GBP was flat at 0.86, with a 0.01% change. The US Dollar Index Futures was lower by 0.12%, trading at 99.62 at the close.


This session reflected modest upward pressure on the headline index despite a larger number of individual declines. Gains were concentrated in a few names and sectors, while commodities and FX showed mixed, contained moves that accompanied the equity trading day.
