Istanbul market slips as tourism and holdings weigh; select stocks and commodities move

BIST 100 closes marginally lower as sector losses outpace gains; energy and fertilizer names post gains while select holdings and healthcare lag

Turkey's main equity gauge closed modestly in the red on Wednesday, with the BIST 100 slipping 0.07% as losses in the Tourism, Holdings & Investments and Wood, Paper & Printing sectors outweighed advances elsewhere. A handful of names including Astor Enerji AS and Gubre Fabrikalari TAS posted notable gains and reached record levels, while several holdings and health-related stocks registered some of the steepest declines. Commodities and FX markets also saw moves, with gold and crude oil rising and Turkish lira crosses shifting slightly.

Stocks on the Istanbul exchange finished lower on Wednesday, with the broad BIST 100 index down 0.07% at the close in Istanbul. Sector-level weakness in Tourism, Holdings & Investments and Wood, Paper & Printing contributed to the downbeat session.

The day's top-performing stocks on the BIST 100 included Astor Enerji AS (IS:ASTOR), which advanced 4.85% or 8.00 points to finish at 173.00. Gubre Fabrikalari TAS (IS:GUBRF) added 4.52% or 23.50 points and closed at 543.00, while Hektas Ticaret TAS (IS:HEKTS) rose 4.32% or 0.14 points to 3.38 in late trade.

On the downside, Kiler Holding AS (IS:KLRHO) recorded the largest drop among BIST 100 names, falling 9.97% or 57.50 points to end the day at 519.00. Gen Ilac ve Saglik Urunleri Sanayi ve Ticaret AS (IS:GENIL) declined 4.30% or 0.37 points to 8.23, and Dap Gayrimenkul Gelistirme AS (IS:DAPGM) lost 4.13% or 0.50 points to close at 11.60.

Breadth on the Istanbul Stock Exchange favored decliners: 329 issues fell compared with 260 that rose, and 21 shares finished unchanged.

Two stocks reached new record highs during the session. Astor Enerji AS rose to an all-time high with its 4.85% gain to 173.00, and Gubre Fabrikalari TAS likewise climbed to an all-time high, up 4.52% to 543.00.

Commodities markets were firmer. Gold futures for April delivery increased 0.81% or 40.65 to trade at 5,071.65 a troy ounce. In energy, crude oil for March delivery rose 1.75% or 1.12 to $65.08 a barrel, while the April Brent contract gained 1.69% or 1.16 to trade at $69.96 a barrel.

Foreign-exchange moves were modest. The USD/TRY pair was up 0.05% at 43.64, while EUR/TRY fell 0.30% to 51.77. The US Dollar Index Futures was firmer as well, trading up 0.25% at 96.92.


Overall, the session was characterized by small index-level losses concentrated in a few sectors, with mixed results at the individual stock level and contemporaneous gains in gold and oil prices.
