Boeing reported 51 jet deliveries in August, a small decrease from July and below the 57 aircraft delivered in the same month last year. The decline was driven by a reduction in 787 Dreamliner handovers, though the company said the drop was not caused by production, supply chain or certification issues. Boeing reiterated its full-year 787 delivery target of 90 to 100 aircraft.

Key Points

  • Boeing delivered 51 jets in August, down from 57 in the same month a year earlier and slightly below July's total.
  • Only four 787 Dreamliners were delivered in August, reducing 2026 787 deliveries to 54 through August; Boeing still expects to deliver 90 to 100 787s by year-end.
  • August deliveries included 41 737 MAX aircraft, with notable recipients including Southwest Airlines, United Airlines and lessor AerCap; Boeing has delivered 418 aircraft through August, its strongest first eight months since 2018.

Boeing recorded 51 aircraft deliveries in August, marking a slight decline from the prior month and down from 57 deliveries in August of last year. The company attributed the lower monthly total largely to fewer 787 Dreamliner handovers.

Deliveries of the 787 in August totaled only four units, compared with nine 787s delivered in the same month a year earlier. A Boeing spokesperson said the reduction in 787 handovers was not the result of production, supply chain or certification problems. Through August, cumulative deliveries of the 787 in 2026 stood at 54 units.

The company reiterated its expectation to deliver between 90 and 100 787s by the end of the year. Boeing has identified rising output of the twin-aisle 787 as an important component of its broader financial recovery.

Across the Airbus-Boeing competitive landscape last month, European rival Airbus delivered 57 jets and recorded 67 orders in August.

August's Boeing deliveries included 41 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, the planemaker's top-selling single-aisle model. Of those 41 MAX jets, nine were handed to Southwest Airlines, eight to United Airlines and five to lessor AerCap.

Year-to-date through August, Boeing has delivered 418 aircraft, the highest total for the first eight months of a year since 2018, when it delivered 481 jets through the same period.

On the commercial orders front, Boeing booked 15 net new orders in August - two for the 737 MAX and 13 for the 787. The orders were recorded for unidentified customers and the company reported no cancellations during the month. After accounting for cancellations in 2026, Boeing's bookings through August totaled 453 orders.

Outlook and context

Boeing's maintained forecast for 90 to 100 787 deliveries by year-end underscores the company's focus on scaling production of the wide-body jet. The company has framed higher 787 output as central to improving profitability, and the August figures show progress in deliveries overall even as monthly 787 handoffs briefly slowed.

Risks

  • A slowdown in 787 deliveries could affect Boeing's near-term revenue and profit recovery if output does not accelerate as forecast - this primarily impacts the aerospace and capital goods sectors.
  • Dependence on meeting year-end 787 delivery targets creates execution risk; failure to reach 90-100 units would influence Boeing's financial turnaround narrative and investor expectations in the aviation market.
