Australian stocks finished the trading day in negative territory on Tuesday as sector declines in Gold, Metals & Mining and Resources pressured the market. At the close in Sydney the S&P/ASX 200 fell 0.88% to 8,672.50, marking a fresh three-month low for the index.
Among individual names, Telix Pharmaceuticals Ltd (ASX:TLX) was the session's leading gainer, rising 8.32% or 1.36 points to close at 17.70. Life360 Inc (ASX:360) added 5.22% or 1.02 points to finish at 20.56, while Perpetual Ltd (ASX:PPT) gained 4.15% or 0.75 points to end the day at 18.81.
On the downside, Summerset Group Holdings Ltd (ASX:SNZ) led losses, sliding 5.76% or 0.38 points to close at 6.22. Austal Ltd (ASX:ASB) declined 5.02% or 0.22 points to 4.16, and Metrics Master Income Trust Unit (ASX:MXT) fell 4.83% or 0.09 points to 1.78.
Declining issues outnumbered advancing ones on the Sydney exchange by 664 to 403, with 393 stocks unchanged. Telix Pharmaceuticals also reached 52-week highs during the session, advancing 8.32% to 17.70.
Volatility edged higher as measured by the S&P/ASX 200 VIX, which rose 2.00% to 14.33, indicating increased implied volatility in ASX option prices.
Commodity prices were mixed. Gold futures for December delivery slipped 0.51% or 22.25 to $4,329.65 a troy ounce. Energy contracts moved higher - crude oil for October delivery climbed 1.88% or 1.91 to $103.30 a barrel, and the November Brent contract rose 1.80% or 1.90 to $107.58 a barrel.
In currency markets, the Australian dollar was effectively flat against the US dollar, with AUD/USD unchanged at 0.71. AUD/JPY ticked up 0.03% to 110.23. The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.28% at 99.38.
