CN Releases its 2026–2027 Winter Plan

Prepared for Winter. Ready to Deliver.

MONTREAL, Sept. 29, 2026 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- CN (TSX: CNR) (NYSE: CNI) today published its 2026–2027 Winter Plan, outlining the actions, investments and technologies the company is using to prepare its railway and support safe, reliable service through the winter months.

As North America’s most northerly Class I railway, CN builds winter readiness into its year-round operating plan. The 2026–2027 Winter Plan focuses on maintaining network fluidity, strengthening equipment reliability and ensuring CN has the people and resources positioned to respond quickly when severe weather affects the network.

Highlights of the 2026–2027 Winter Plan:

• Strengthening winter reliability: CN is enhancing the reliability of its fleet of more than 100 distributed air braking cars through predictive maintenance, including the replacement of 21 engines and compressors, and fleet-wide modifications designed to improve air car performance in extreme cold. Since launching the program, CN has invested approximately $64 million in the technology.
  
• Advancing cold-weather technology: CN continues to advance high-flow brake system technology, using multiple air sources along a train to help maintain stable brake pressure when air leakage increases in extreme cold. CN is seeking a permanent regulatory exemption for the technology in Canada after years of demonstrating its safety advantages. CN is also operating with higher airflow between Chicago and Winnipeg under a two-year U.S. regulatory waiver.
  
• Preparing people and resources: CN is strengthening its ability to respond to severe weather through rapid deployment teams, rules-qualified managers and the temporary redeployment of qualified employees. CN also stages Mechanical and Engineering resources, snow-clearing equipment, backup power, critical materials and locomotives in strategic locations ahead of winter.

CN’s Winter Plan emphasizes the importance of collaboration across the supply chain. Accurate customer forecasts, safe and prepared facilities, fluid traffic movements at terminals and ports, and close coordination among customers and supply chain partners all play an important role in keeping goods moving when winter conditions reduce available capacity.
