The FBI announced that multiple suspects were taken into custody following a multi-state probe that uncovered an alleged plot to attack the UFC America 250 event staged on the White House South Lawn. Director Kash Patel credited swift coordination with partner agencies and the Department of Justice for stopping the plan, which federal investigators say involved explosive-laden drones, a staged sniper team and a follow-on assault at the White House gate.

Key Points

  • FBI arrested multiple individuals in a multi-state operation that allegedly disrupted a planned attack on the UFC America 250 event at the White House.
  • Investigators reportedly infiltrated Signal chats where nearly two dozen users discussed pre-operational activity, including plans using explosive-laden drones and a pre-staged sniper team.
  • Impacted sectors include national security and law enforcement, event security and planning, and defense/aviation related to drone threats.

FBI Director Kash Patel said Tuesday that federal agents, working with partner agencies and the Department of Justice, arrested multiple individuals who allegedly planned an attack on the UFC America 250 event held on the White House South Lawn on Sunday evening.

"Thanks to the rapid action of this FBI, our partners, and the Department of Justice in a multi-state operation, multiple individuals are now in custody and allegedly planned attacks were stopped cold," Patel wrote in a post on X.

According to reporting cited by federal authorities, the investigation began after a family member of one suspect contacted law enforcement. That tip prompted agents to probe encrypted messaging on Signal, where investigators say nearly two dozen users discussed pre-operational steps targeting the event.

Federal law enforcement agencies reportedly gained access to those Signal chats and uncovered what they describe as a layered plan. The plot allegedly envisioned explosive-laden drones striking nearby buildings to force a mass evacuation, directing the fleeing crowd toward a pre-staged sniper team. Prosecutors allege a second wave of attackers was to then press toward the White House gate.

President Trump hosted the showcase on the White House South Lawn to mark his 80th birthday and to recognize the country's upcoming 250th anniversary. The director emphasized the bureau's capability to detect and disrupt threats, particularly at large public gatherings.

"We are built to detect, respond to, and bring to justice those who threaten the lives of American citizens - particularly during large gatherings like the historic UFC 250 fight," Patel wrote.

The announcement comes amid references to prior incidents involving threats to the White House complex and the president. The public record cited in the department's statement notes that in 2024 the president was shot during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, and that additional assassination attempts have been reported at the president's golf club in Florida and at the White House Correspondents Dinner earlier in the year.

Authorities have described the arrests as the product of a coordinated, multi-state operation, crediting the disruption to timely reporting by a family member and subsequent investigative work that infiltrated encrypted communications. Beyond the arrests themselves, officials have not released further operational specifics in this announcement.

  • Heightened security measures and increased operational costs for organizers of large public events due to elevated perceived risk (impacts events and hospitality sectors).
  • Potential implications for aviation security and defense procurement stemming from the alleged use of drones as weapon delivery systems (impacts defense and aerospace sectors).
